Henderson was surveyed by Samuel Hopkins and Thomas Allin in 1797 on a site called Red Banks. The town grew wealthy from dark tobacco exports to Great Britain. John James Audubon, the famous naturalist, lived and worked in Henderson from 1810 to 1819, studying and painting birds along the Ohio River.
