About Newburgh

History of Newburgh
Founded by John Sprinkle in 1803 and Abner Luce in 1829, Newburgh prospered as a river port before railroads bypassed it in favor of Evansville. The town was a prominent stop on the Underground Railroad. Colonel Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson's raid in 1862 — using fake cannons made of stovepipe and charred logs — prompted the federal government to station regular Union Army soldiers in Indiana.
