History
Gibson County was settled by John Severns of Wales in 1789–90. The county's abolitionist history is well documented: David Stormont, John Carithers, and Sarah Merrick (who was jailed for helping escaped slaves) all operated within the county. James Washington Cockrum's home in Oakland City remains a landmark of the Underground Railroad.
