History of Evansville
Founded in 1812 by Hugh McGary Jr. and named for Colonel Robert Morgan Evans, Evansville grew as a river port and railroad hub. During WWII, the city produced nearly half of all P-47 Thunderbolts — 6,242 aircraft. The 45-acre Evansville Shipyard was the nation's largest inland producer of LST landing craft.
